Abstract

This study aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the role of sustainability and recycling-based service-learning practices in beauty services education. Today, the beauty services industry is considered one of the sectors with increasing environmental impact due to the intensive use of chemical products, plastic packaging waste, single-use materials, and high consumption patterns. This situation makes it necessary for sustainability to move beyond a theoretical concept and become an integral part of educational processes.

Sustainability is a multidimensional concept that includes environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Within the scope of this study, particular emphasis is placed on environmental sustainability and the integration of recycling practices into beauty services education. Incorporating recycling processes into educational programs enhances students’ environmental awareness, develops waste management competencies, and supports the formation of responsible professional behaviors. In addition, within the framework of the circular economy approach, re-evaluating the life cycle of cosmetic products and reintegrating waste into production processes are considered essential components of sustainability.

Service-learning practices are an important educational approach that connects students’ learning processes with real-life experiences. Activities such as cosmetic packaging collection campaigns, zero-waste beauty workshops, recycling education programs, and upcycling projects contribute to the development of sustainability awareness at both individual and societal levels. These practices also strengthen students’ social responsibility, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

The study concludes that the systematic integration of sustainability and recycling-oriented service-learning practices into beauty services education plays a crucial role in reducing the environmental impact of the sector and in training more environmentally conscious professionals. The findings indicate that sustainability-oriented educational approaches not only provide environmental benefits but also enhance professional ethics and social responsibility.
